5 Myths About Drug Abuse and Addiction – Get the Facts

Even in an age where information is at our fingertips, there still exists a large population of people that still don’t adequately understand drug use, abuse and addiction.  This is largely due to all the misinformation and the varying philosophies on drug addiction and treatment shared on the internet – especially social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  This short blog is meant to address and debunk 5 of the most common drug myths related to abuse and addiction.

1. Overcoming Addiction is Simply a Matter of Willpower

5 Myths About Drug Abuse and Addiction - WillpowerAddiction is a disease and proof exists showing that it chemically and structurally alters the brain in those who suffer from it  Drugs and other mind altering substances also alter the brain, creating cognitive and behavioral changes in men and women suffering from drug addiction.  The result of addiction is a ubiquitous connection and a cognitive compulsion to use.  This temporary yet exceptionally powerful urge can only be satisfied by indulging or engaging in the “object” they’re addicted to.  An addict will do virtually anything to obtain their drug of choice.  This includes overcoming any obstacles and/or using any and all available tools to make acquiring and using their drug of choice easier.  In many cases, relationships are damaged because to an addict, people are seen as either an obstacle to overcome or a tool to use.   While quitting heroin and drug use is possible, powerful urges make it exceptionally difficult to stop simply by exerting will.

2. You are Powerless Over Your Disease

Addiction is a disease of the brain and overcoming its symptoms are rather difficult.  But declaring powerlessness is often the acceptance of an addict’s condition and an excuse to continue engaging a lifestyle of ongoing drug use, abuse and active addiction.  An addict doesn’t have to simply sit back and accept a lifestyle of ongoing drug use.  Thankfully, chemical and structural changes in the brain can be reversed and treated with ongoing therapy, medication and other forms of addiction treatment

3. An Addict Must Hit Rock Bottom Before Treatment is Possible

What exactly is rock bottom anyway?  True “rock bottom” is death from an overdose or long-term addiction.  Since addiction treatment isn’t possible after you die, waiting to hit “rock bottom” is a bad idea.  It can always get worse and when it gets to it’s absolute worst or “rock bottom”, there’s no coming back.  Thus, men and women suffering from heroin or drug addiction are advised to reach out for help immediately.  In fact, the earlier an addict gets help, the more likely treatment will be successful.  Get addiction help by filling out our brief addiction treatment request form.

4. Only Those Who Want Help Can Be Successfully Treated

The probability of success in treating drug and heroin addiction may be greater if the addict wants help.  However, stories exist where an addict has been thrown in jail or mandated to treatment by their family, employer or for legal reasons and while they were angry and bitter at first, they were later thankful.  Many have claimed that forced addiction treatment / therapy was the best thing that ever happened to them.  Some of these stories can be found in the “Drug Addiction and Recovery Stories” section of our heroin addiction forum.

5. If Addiction Treatment didn’t Work Before, Why Try Again?

Recovery from drug addiction is a lifelong process and not everyone gets it right the first time.  This is even true for those who really want addiction help.  Relapse is very common and although this fact shouldn’t be used as an excuse to use, it’s also not an indication of a failure.  For those who have relapsed, don’t let guilt or shame stop you from getting back on track.  Instead, shake it off and re-dedicate yourself to sobriety and long-term recovery.  See also, “Why Relapse Isn’t a Sign of Failure“.
